edited June 2022 in Trailer & Towing
Wanted to start a thread that was a central place for people to post their towing MPG with their tow vehicle so we have a list of vehicles and their towing MPG for those shopping for replacement TV.

- Year - Make - Model - Engine of Tow Vehicle
- Year - 400 - Trim
- MPG overall
- Average tow speeds

Perhaps if this takes off we can get it pinned/stickied
2022 T@B 400 Boondock (7200+ miles)

2023 - 4 trips - 21 nights and counting

-2019 Toyota Tacoma off road with tow package

As listed above this truck gets about 10 mpg below 70 mph. 70+ mph it gets about 8 or 9 mpg. Traveling out West is hard due to the wind and the massive elevation change. If I had to buy over, I'd probably get a Tundra.

Nearly identical numbers (ours is a 2021 400 BD) for us. We live in Utah and have really pushed it on hills and such. The worst MPG we got was 8mpg due to a headwind headed out to Oregon. Best we’ve gotten was 14mpg and I still don’t know how we did that.

2021 400BD pulled by 2000 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V8 TRD 4x4. I did my first trip and my mileage went from my standard 16.5 down to 12.5 averaging ~55-60 MPH. I live in California where the trailer speed limit is 55 and gas cost $6.79/gallon average. Trip was 850 miles and cost ~$462.00.

2020 Ram 5.7L, 8 speed transmission, 2021 Tab400 BD. Just went from NM to Illinois and back, travel speed usually at 65-68 mph = 11.3 mpg for the 2990 mile trip. We did get as low as 8mpg during some heavy headwinds.

Would love to hear from folks with X5, Q7 or smaller diesel vehicles. I am shopping the half ton's with small diesels and would love to know MPG's to see if its cost effective.

@schwartzki, I went from a F-150 with a 3.5 Ecoboost averaging 10.4 MPG at 62 MPH to the F-250 Diesel for the very reason of MPG. Even my MPG empty is higher then the F-150 was and I have 2 x the power.

Unfortunately, to pay for a vehicle in fuel savings will take 20 years +/- based on the calculations I did 18 months ago before the prices at the pump went stupid. So, it may take more or less at today's prices depending on miles traveled per year.

BTW, the current "median price" of a vehicle is $48K, in 4 years, it is projected to be $80K, and in 8 years it is projected to be $130K.

2018 Nissan Titan Pro4X with 5.6 V8.  I get 12-13 mpg towing around Denver and all through the mountains.  Better mpg than my Tacoma got.  Still not the best but considering there is a lot of mountain towing and the truck is paid for I'm pretty happy with that.

TaB 400 (2018) modified to a Boondock axle and wheels.
Jeep Gladiator Sport truck (2020), w/tow package.

On a recent trip to Clear Lake from Mendocino coast area, I got an average of 16mpg on my Jeep Gladiator, and 18mpg on Hwy 101 part of the trip.  This is better than the. 12-14mpg I got with a Dodge Dakota Spirt with max tow package.

F-150 hybrid towing 2022 BD 400: On a ~90 mile trip over rolling highways and secondary paved roads, and averaging about 45 mph we go 14.5 mpg. This is the best we've gotten and I attribute that to 1) lower speed, and 2) the hybrid system can take advantage of the ups and downs. I don't have exact stats but in a few other trips on "normal" highways and interstates traveling a higher speeds we've gotten 11-12 mpg. As I'm sure everyone knows, speed is a big deal - wind resistance increases as the square of velocity.

    16MPG (15L/100km) @ 62mph (100kph) in fairly windfree conditions.

If we are driving behind a semi truck (not *too* close mind you) we can get about 18-19mpg.  Or if we have a good tailwind.  On the flip side, a headwind can make things worse.

I live at the base of the Sierra Nevadas, so all of my towing involves mountains. East or west, it includes 7000' passes, and that's if I stay on the Interstate.

10 MPG overall average towing. In the flatlands of America, around 11.5 to 13. Strictly in the mountains, around 9. Went to uCamp twice (2400 miles each way) and that really gave me a feel for what to expect with mileage.

I tow mostly with my 2020 Jeep Cherokee LTD for anything longer than an hour away from home.  The Cherokee is a V6 with tow package.  It gets about 29mpg without the TAB 320s and between 18-20 towing depending on speed. 18 at 70 and 20 at 60.  Around home we tow with a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon V6 with towing package that gets about 18-20 not towing and around 14-15 towing at 60mph.  We live in central Arkansas.

OK, on our last rip, which was mostly on rural roads, with a short highway segment.  We got 18-19 mpg on the highway, and averaged 15mpg on the rural back roads.  Our max speed was 55mph and averages around 45mph on the back roads with some detours.  The trip was around 150 miles each way.  Towing a TaB400 Boondock with a Jeep Gladiator, V6 with factory tow package.

Just got back from a 970 mile trip from Colorado to the Black Hills SD.  We averaged 12.7 mpg.  That included towing back up the hills to our house going over two passes over 11,000 feet, local driving in the black hills and lots of hwy driving to include I-80 in Nebraska and Wyoming with the usual brutal head and cross winds. Hwy speeds were 60-65 mph on average.   It does not seem to matter where we tow in the western region.  It always averages out to 12-13 mpg.  I do enjoy the larger truck in those heavy cross winds.

Just finished a 5118 mile trip from Oregon to St. Louis and back.
    2015 Toyota Tundra SR5 2WD with 4.6 L V-8 towing a 2021 T@B 320 CS-S.
We were loaded with additional furniture for some relatives on the way there.  A little lighter on the way home.  Consistently got 13.2 mpg.
On the way home I noticed that the engine seemed to run and pull better in the early morning and if the day got really hot it seems as though I had an anchor behind me and that it was continually shifting down.
It got me thinking.  Though I had taken it to the dealer and told them that I was going on this trip and that in addition to the oil change I wanted other things checked as well.  They did not replace the air filter saying that it looked fine.
I just had the feeling it was starved for air as the weather warmed up.  I changed the filter and went from 13.2 to 14.9.  Over that many miles that is substantial.  The filter may have looked good but we drove in smokey conditions last year and I am thinking that ash particles had restricted that filter.   Anyway, wish I had changed it even before we left.

I hate it when a dealer doesn’t do what is asked, like replacing the air filter, regardless of what it looked like.  I change air filters based on how many hours it has been used, and if in dusty conditions, sooner, than later.
    Cheers
