You can always open the toilet valve(like you are flushing) and look down inside with a flashlight. If you have pyramids, you have problems. If you don't, you're good to go!2 -

I just use the regular Happy Campers powder. I'm at the end of my first season, still no smells or left over residue after I dump the tanks! Even my dump hose is smell free.1 -
