I mounted a motion activated solar porch light to the side of my door, under the handle. It does a good job of lighting the step and I hardly use the original porch light anymore. -

Given the amount of gear you like to haul maybe a pickup truck is a better solution? Or maybe a popup camper (would eliminate the overhang problem).
