Thinking of changing from "Sid" to "S@d," except, I'm not!

Need an explanation. When I was a kid, going with the family on a (early 60's)camping trip, one of our neighbors said, "Don't ever go into the woods with a bare/bear behind."

I'm not sure if he meant "bare" (adjective), or "bear" noun.  Can't ask that neighbor as, long ago, he assumed room temperature.
