Having difficulty picking off power from license plate light for backup camera.

I can see where the wires go thru the wall to the license plate light but I can push a wire thru the tube. Do I need to take off the black exterior cowering piece outside?

I have an 18 cs s and simply used a wire running under the tab straight to the battery from the camera

Ran my Garmin back-up camera (BC-35) power to the front also (along with the transmitter). Hooked it to the running light circuit in the junction box by the spare tire. Displays on my Garmin GPS so I don't need another monitor. (2021 320S Boondock)
