Texas Bound

We are heading to Texas for the month of March and have booked, due to Spring break, stays at mostly state parks.  After starting out in NE Texas, We are headed SW of Dallas, then near Austin and San Antonio, then Big Thistle, before swinging down along the Rio Grande to Big Bend.  After a short stay near Fort Davis, we will head North to Huenco Tanks and Guadelupe Mountains/Carlsbad Caverns.  Before leaving the state, we will stay at a few parks near Amarillo.  Any suggestions for some off the beaten path or not to miss things to do or see in these areas?  Our Labradoodle is always with us, so we normally stick to places that she is welcome, but we are not opposed to taking her to a nice doggy day care occasionally.  Any and all suggestions welcome.

Austin is a very dog friendly city if you get into the city.  With your pup, we recommend a walk around Town Lake and lunch at Shady Grove on Barton Springs Rd.  There is a large off-leash park along the lake near The Long Center for the Performing Arts.  If you have more time a stroll up South Capitol St. near the lake on a weekend or any day is great fun.
