Repacking wheel bearings

Has anyone ever used a heavier bearing than the one that comes with the trailer?

@Carolyn..do you mean heavier bearing grease or are you actually asking about using alternative bearings? If you are asking about wheel bearing grease, any good lithium / moly based wheel bearing grease will do just fine....LMX Red is what E trailer suggests for an EZ lube Dexter axles. The trick with grease is to use the same type ...always...your axles should have a lithium based grease in them. Aluminum and lithium based greases should never be mixed. If they are mixed the grease will separate and leak out and possibly ruin your brakes as well as inadequately lubricate the bearings. As far as "heaviness" is concerned, there are grease grades that indicate how heavy/thick they are...you would never try to use the heaviest in a grease gun (6) and more commonly you would use something like a 2. Given that you need to grease every 12K miles or annually there is no reason to try to stray from convention. Before you do anything, check the manual and confirm the grease type.
