One of our favorite campgrounds

We just got back from a Calif State park we have been going to for years, Kirk Creek, about 25 miles south of Big Sur on the Calif Coast. It is a very small campground with nothing much to offer other than the most tremendous views of the Pacific Ocean from the cliffs the campground sits on.

Rad - Tried to get in there (based on your recommendation) when I was on the Coast Highway way back in Mar/Apr but every campsite on the coast was booked solid. And of course, I'm not big on planning (prefer roaming free) so was SOL. Sure looked nice though.

I found out they only book 50% of the thirty something sites, the rest are on a first come basis.PXLated said:Rad - Tried to get in there (based on your recommendation) when I was on the Coast Highway way back in Mar/Apr but every campsite on the coast was booked solid. Yep - And they were all full :-(
All the federal campgrounds I've been at that do take reservations have a certain percentage that are first come first serve. But, you don't want to try on Friday as all the weekenders are out. I always try to get in a campground on Thurs. -
It is hard to see in the third pic, but the trailer tounge is just inches off the ground. That is how un-level our site was and most of the others are the same. I'm sure glad I just picked up a short flat jack foot, I never would have been able to level the rig with the jack wheel on.
The plus part of the very sloped campground, it is like being in giant theater seating for RV's, no chance your view can be blocked by another rig. -
Patti - I'm not one to sit and wait, there's always another campsite somewhere down the road :-) And out west there's always some BLM in the area. I know that doesn't work for most, especially those with fixed travel dates.
Usually the check out time is between 11 and 1:00. Reservations are usually prepaid so don't open up unless they call and notify the campground. I've seen reservation people roll in at midnight.
In the case of Big Sur, I ended up in a nice county park with towering Redwoods and hardly anyone there. I had to be in San Francisco for a few days so it worked out well as I was able to leave the T@B unattended and the park rangers watched over it for me. -
Rad, pics are gorgeous, thanks for sharing! We'll make sure to look the place up when we manage to get that far west with our T@Bby...
