How to fix knob inside the Fantastic Fan that raises and lowers the outside lid.

My fan works fine but the knob that opens the lid does not do that any longer. Has anyone had to repair this before? What was the issue and how hard was it to repair? I am handy to a point so if this is too intricate I will just settle on replacing the entire fan unit, if I can find someone to do it:)
