Curious, but not essential.

many posters have a US map affixed that shows, with colors, where they have camped. How does one do that? Sorry to take up time and space with something so trivial, but I have been curious

You can buy decal kits for this through places like Amazon and Camping World.

"posters" - You talking posters as in paper things or people that post in the forums?
-
I think you are meaning posters on the forum here. There are many sites out there that will create a map for you. I used this one, but you can find many others by Googling "states visited map."
I have the image hosted on my own photo site and then just link it in to my signature line. You can click on it to enlarge it, I tried to make it as small as possible but still clear and visible.

Or, are you talking about maps of the actual sites one has stayed? These people do it (scroll down to bottom of post for the map)...

Somewhere on their site they explain how they create the maps. -

So Alan - What is it...States visited or mapping your sites that you were looking for?
-
States visited, PX. Now I just need to figure out how to attach it to my posts...or not
-
Note: We prefer non-graphical, short sigs. Attached graphics tend to get overpowering. Especially when viewed on a multipost thread.
-
Small graphics are fine. The graphic in my signature line is 33k, pretty small.
It should be noted that signature graphics can be turned off by going to your profile>Edit You Profile (a drop down with the shadowed figure)>Signature Settings (last selection in the list to the right) and then clicking the checkbox "Strip images out of signatures."
All signature images must be hosted off site, if you use the site Visitiedstatesmap.com they will host the image for you, you just create the map and copy the address in the box "Image URL." In the signature editor; paste that into into the field for the image in the signature editing box (it will say "Image URL").
Pretty much it. Be sure to resize it to make it small. You can also embed a hypelink on top of the image to a larger version.
