Travel Advice - Joshua Tree > Bakersfield

Hello,
we will be traveling from Joshua Tree NP to Bakersfield in a few days. I am towing my Tab with Rav 4. I would like advice re the easiest route in terms of elevations and traffic congestion. My choices are taking 58 thru Barstow or 18 thru Victorville. Does anyone have any recommendations re which route maybe better? Thanks ,
