I just replaced the crank with if I remember a 1/2” bolt. Just pop off the top cover for access. I think it was a 6” bolt. I cut off the thread. Then I drilled a small hole in it to match the crank handle. If you are not good with tools. Ask a friend or neighbor. Good luck

  Just a plan old bathroom scale will work fine. Checked mine yesterday 287lbs. For the most accurate weight weigh at the ball socket not at the tongue jack. It does make a slight difference.

  I think tow mileage maybe a factor and or maybe road conditions. Some road in the US are getting really bad California for one. That’s still no excuse for this kind of failure.

  It’s possible that just the bouncing and pitching of the trailer going down the road. The water level in the traps could allow fumes to escape.
