Doesn't the CS have a safety valve that shuts off propane when the lid is closed ? The issue might be there. Edit: Just googled it, there is a switch at the left strut.1 -

I'm not Sharon but yes, "I" for heat and hot water, "J" for hot water only. Think of it as a mode selector. The other switches control the heat source.1 -
