You probably figured this out, but those shackles need to be able to as strong as the chain or stronger. If the shackles are a "weak link" the safety chain won't do it's job.1 -

Yes. Its probably a good idea to prop it up with some kind of blocks while you loosen the nuts. Like many others, I moved my spare to the tongue. IMO the trailer needed a little bit more tongue weig…1
