Eliminating Tab 400 Rear AC?

One night in a moment of frustration over the rear AC duct that blows at the side of my head, I removed the register and stuffed a towel in it.  Turns out this works for me temperature wise.   So my question is, are there any unintended negative consequences of blocking off this duct?  I see three approaches.  1)something more elegant than the towel that’s in it now; 2)block it at the manifold on the CoolCat; and 3)remove the duct from the manifold and let the cold air flood the compartment under the dinette seat where the CoolCat lives.

I would block the duct at the wall in the bedroom area. Resale value is a good reason. We all say this is our last T@B (yeah, go ahead and laugh, @ScottG!!), but sometimes life throws us a curve ball. Don’t make a change that you will have to explain to a new owner why you didn’t have time to put it back k the way it was.

My opinion is based on seeing a lot of new buyers last year who have already sold their new T@B’s within a year of purchase.  Life changed, jobs were lost, had to follow a job, pandemic is slowed down and they can fly again—lots of valid reasons.

I think it’s designed with three ports in mind. So blocking off one may cause too much positive pressure in the system and burn out the blower motor. Not totally sure about this though.

  • There may not be enough air flowing across the coil that it may ice over.

  • I also dislike cold air blowing directly on me.  By rotating the duct cover 180 degrees, the air now blows upward over my head - which works for me.

Spin the duct and/or damper it. I would be reluctant to block it entirely.

@manyman297 How is your rear A/C register mod working out?

I haven’t modded mine. I just point it up and let the cool air fall down.

I sent Dometic this question on their support form.   I’ll share the response when I get it.

Thanks for the update @rhyno. It’s the one mod I’m motivated enough to do and that I might be able to accomplish.

Ahh. Didn’t realize some people are referring to the older 400s where the duct was lower. Yeah, I can see how that could be annoying. Glad they moved that duct up.

@manyman297 - Our 2021 has the bed's AC duct at head level. Isn't your 2021 at that same height or is nuCamp moving the AC duct up to the top again?

I have the 3 way fridge on my 2021 . I think I remember someone saying that if you have the 3 way the duct is head level and if you have a 2 way it’s higher?

I'm losing my mind. You're right. I think your pillow threw me off as it looks like the duct is right at mattress height.

I actually don't find its location an issue as long as the register is pointing upward. I'd rather have it there than up high. I find that when it's really hot I like to just point it straight at me to get cool quicker.
