Install of MaxxFan T@B 400

After some encouraging words from Austin at nüCamp, I finally tackled replacing our Fantastic Fan with the MaxxFan 6200K.  Austin had told me they use gardening knee pads on the roof to keep from denting the aluminum, so I devised a layering system that was probably overkill, but it worked.  I used a layer of 1/2” packing foam board, followed by a folded over sheet of cardboard, then a sheet of 1/8” hard board, a thick beach towel folded in half, followed by two gardening pads!  It worked great; all roof work completed and no dents!

The Fantastic Fan is just held down by some adhesive and then the leveling sealant.  No screws!

I centered the MaxxFan base in the opening, and then nervously drilled a lot of holes into the aluminum tubing surrounding the opening.

Added butyl tape to the underside, screwed the base down, then liberally applied Dicor leveling caulk to all screw heads and around the perimeter.

Getting the fan to seat into the base’s grooves, while applying pressure to align the holes and hold a screw to the end of a screwdriver was a chore.  I had to press down on the corners to get the holes to align.  Outside is done.

Great write up! I just got through doing the same install (with the 7500K version). Everything went well but my dicor started to crack once it started drying which I had never seen before. Scraped it all off and need to reapply. I ended up working from inside through the roof vent opening because I was so paranoid about denting the roof…even though I have several tiny dings there already from whoever installed the original fans at the factory.
