I need things explained like I am 5 - bathroom sink removal

We are removing our sink in the bathroom of our 2019 T@B 400. During our last trip a few days ago, my wife accidentally unscrewed the drain in the sink. We have been considering doing a remodel before this, but now we kinda have to.

All that said, we have looked at some really nice mods here on the forum that are giving us inspiration. However, while my wife finds me handy… I have no idea how to cap off the water lines or the drain. As the title says, I would like to have this explained like I am 5 so I can do this before we go on our next trip in just over a week. The bathroom mods will happen later.

@Syd, I have never had to cap off a PEX water line, but I have replaced PEX water line fittings in my T@B. Capping off a water line can be done easily with a plastic (or metal) water line plug using a PEX Crimp Tool and 1/2" clamp ring.

And, here's an example of a water line plug that you can use to close off the water lines when you remove the bathroom sink (this is from Lowes, but you can get them at other hardware stores, or online, such as Amazon):

If you have trouble inserting the ribs of the plug into the water line, you can slightly heat/warm the end of the PEX tubing and that should allow the fitting to slide right in. I use a small "cake decorating torch", but a hair dryer will likely work just as well. Be sure to slide the clamp ring onto the PEX before inserting the plug into the water line.

If it helps, I wrote these basic instructions for my personal reference when using the crimp tool. I rarely use the tool, so it helps to have the instructions handy for reference when I do. Once you watch the videos, the instructions should make sense:

• To clamp, point the “1” toward the red dot and position the tool perpendicular to the PEX tubing.
• To remove, point the “2” toward the red dot and position the tool parallel to the PEX tubing.
• Be sure to lock the selector in place, using the lock on the other side of the head of the tool.
• Once you begin clamping down on the ring, the tool ratchets/clicks as it tightens. Once it begins clamping, the ratchet will not release until it’s been completely and fully clamped.

The crimping tool and extra clamp rings (as well as a pipe cutting tool) are handy to keep in your tool box in the event a PEX fitting breaks, or you need to repair a water line. Worth the relatively small investment.

@Bayliss - Looking at the connectors, it looks like I might be able to find a screw-on cap. The hoses from the sink tap just screw onto the lines coming out of the floor.

@pthomas745 - I have looked at quite a few mod threads and have gotten some really good ideas. The only bit that is missing in all those threads is how to cap the lines. As I mentioned to Bayliss, the tap lines screw into the feeder lines and so I will look into a screw-on cap and see if that works.

@pthomas745 found the thread for my 2019 where we also lost the drain into the fold down sink bowl. Unless you are a magician I could see no way to fish that thing out. The post I made on pulling that sink is here:

I had three lines to cap as you mention. The Pex lines I used a simple threaded 1/2 inch cap with some plumbers tape to the threads and used a plug and screw clamp on the corrugated drain going to the trap below. Your drain might be different. Mine have done fine with no leaks detected in a couple of years. I had a concern about creating two dead end PEX lines for winterizing the plumbing but have not convinced myself it is really a concern. Not sure if others have input on this.

Hope this helps and we do not miss the sink. Find a lot of use for the swinging towel rods.

@qhumberd - Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This is the info I was looking for. Our sink is the exact same as yours. Now I can proceed to cap things off properly and then in the fall get to building some nice shelves to replace the sink!
