What are these? (Waste water)

I checked out 3 free camping areas today and they all had these marked, "Waste Water." Can I really empty my grey water here?

Yes, that is a drain pit for grey water.  They are commonly used in some National Forests.  I can't really tell from the photo, but it should be filled with gravel or stone.

They are in Ferwood and Harrison State Forests. Three mice campgrounds all free! I would not want to use the pit toilets there (I usually don't mind) but other than that, they seemed very nice! I talked to a forestry guy who said they were all very family oriented. One is near a dawn til dusk shooting range, but more than a safe distance away. The first is near Bloomington, Oh and the other 2 are closest to Cadiz. Making them all around an hour or just over an hour from Pittsburgh. 2 of the three have decent 4g cell phone service. The sites are paved, and have fire rings and picnic tables and there are trash cans at every site.

Thanks for the info on them, I had thought about using the one at Ferwood before Tearstock last year, but time did not permit.  Will have to check them out.

States the T@Bpole has camped, so far ;)

The forestry guy said they get pretty full on weekends in the summer so go early if you go.

Is it a sin to attach a soaker hose to your gray water tank and irrigate flowers and grass with soapy water?

Only if you are at your own home. Illegal in most other places.

Only a very few campgrounds allow the dumping of gray water.  Most will have info available as to whether it is allowed, how far from streams is has to be, etc.
