Now I've Done It - Broke The Plumbing Vent Cap

lapowers57lapowers57 Member Posts: 186
While putting the cover on my T@B I broke the plumbing vent cap, I snapped the stalk that the screw fits into at the base.  Does any one know what type of glue would work best on this?  If not I may just use some GOOP until I have time to install a new cap this fall.

To clarify - Are you talking the black vent on top of the T@B? If so, that's actually the fresh air intake for the air conditioner.

I'm pretty sure that's PVC, in which case, PVC glue would work great. Know any plumbers?

Yes, that is what I am talking about.  I assumed it was the vent for the black/grey water tanks similar to a home system.  I will look at this when I get home, curious to see where it exits into the AC compartment.

The questions remains, what would be the best glue or adhesive to fix this.  I am getting ready to leave for 3 weeks of travel and would prefer not to replace the entire fitting at this time.  I think GOOP would probably hold well enough for my upcoming trips if there is no better option.

If it is PVC, which I thought it might be, I have no issues making the fix with PVC cement.  I have plumbed half my house over the last ten years.

I did some research yesterday and found that this fitting is not PVC it is polyethylene.  From what I read not the easiest thing to glue but Loctite has a 2 part system that is suppose to make a permanent bond.  Live glue for PVC it has a primer and a glue.  I glued it last night and put the cap back on this morning.  I put the screw in until just tight.  The glue says it needs 24 hours for full strength so I might tighten it down a bit more tonight.  Hopefully this will hold up as I will be on the road most of the next three weeks.

I had the same problem originally described - post that the screw fits into broke off. Fortunately it didn't break off all the way to the base. I got a 1.5" #8 stainless steel panhead screw which reached the remainder of the post (original screw was either .5" or .75".) Unfortunately the well in the cap in which the screw sits also cracked, but since the cap fits fairly snugly anyway, maybe my duct-tape repair of that piece will hold.

The Loctite product I used is called Loctite plastics bonding system and polyethylene is one of the plastics it is designed for.   Hopefully it will do as advertised.

Did an 800 mile road trip this weekend and the cap stayed in place.  Next trip is 1700 miles in 1.5 weeks and I am feeling good the fix will hold.

And we hit an hour and 45 minute wait at the border which then put us in an hour and a half wait in Montreal rush hour.  Our 7 hr trip one way turned into almost 10.5.  As soon as the trailer was set up and we heard the first band start playing, the blood pressure came down and all was good.
