Atlantic City to Albuquerque - Trip Planning

Hello all.
I am considering a May, 2000 miler from southern New Jersey to Albuquerque, NM.
Will have a month in NM prior to our return to the East Coast.
I am hoping the forum participants will be able to provide some input on route planning tools, camp site suggestions, tips and tricks, etc.
I'd like to limit my daily drive time to 8 hours so it seems that 4 or 5 days on the road would seem reasonable.
It's not my first cross country drive but it will be my first long distance trip with our 2016 T@B S Max.
My preference is to layover at non-private (National, State, County, etc.) locations.
The route will most likely be interstate travel and I'm not in a hurry (no doubt I'll be in the right lane for the duration!).
