Weird behavior from Jensen DVD player

We were camping with our T@B 320S and decided to try out the DVD player. It would not play multiple DVD discs that we had brought along. Some would not load at all, some were pixelated and garbled, and some played just fine. All discs checked out just fine at home and do not have any visible damage/scratching. 

The second and even stranger thing was that the DVD player turned itself and the TV on in the middle of the night 2 nights in a row. First time it happen, I figured it was a power surge but I thought that was unlikely 2 nights in a row.

Any ideas on how to fix or prevent? Obviously, we will not level discs in the player anymore. Thanks
