I am considering purchasing a generator for boondocking this summer.....how many start-up amps does the Cool Cat require?

I think there are reports that the 2000w class will work if you install a MicroAir softstart, otherwise probably need to have a pair of 2000w or a 3000w or bigger.

I have the micro on my other trailer and it is wonderful. Able to start up a 13.5kw AC on a 2000 class. Just know that a 2000 will be running full blast and it’s max volume keeping the AC going.

A 13,500 BTU AC has somewhere around a 50A surge from a cold locked rotor state. It is because of that huge draw for a fraction of a second that you need either the Softstart or a BIG generator for the fraction of a second at startup. Once running, the 2000w generator should work, BUT it will be pretty much maxed out, so don't start other big loads with air conditioner running. There are lots of You Tube videos on the MicroAir Softstart, but this one while boring and long is the one produced by the company. What I like is they show the start up amps required with and without the product installed, vast difference in initial start amp draw.

None that I could see before or since doing it. Had it done at RV show so received a discount on purchase and install.

No downside that I know of except for initial cost (about $300 + install if you don't do it yourself) and I suppose another thing to fail. My understanding is it electrically disconnects from the circuit after startup.
