National Forest Campgrounds in CO and Closing Dates

I am working on my fall trip planning and noticed that a lot of the NFS campgrounds close on Sept 30. Does anyone know if camping is permitted after those dates, with the expectation that no water, electric, or toilets are available? I am looking especially around Almont and Crested Butte.

I understand that any of these could become inaccessible due to weather.

It varies a lot...mostly depends on the weather. There are several around us that are open in the
Fall (the best time of the year), but no services, and either no, or reduced self service, fees. Contact the Public Lands Center here in Durango...they're great...and they can advise : (970) 247-4874

In Minnesota, many of the NFS campgrounds post that there are no services beyond a certain date, but people are allowed to camp at their own risk.

If you can't find an NFS campground that is open, I'd follow JD's great suggestion and ask the Public Lands Center for coordinates to a good dispersed camping location.

That's good to know GMUG has not moved to that, yet, but maybe that is in the works.
