Outback Bike Mount

Just put some bike racks on the Yakima bars. Looks like it's going to work pretty good. Both our Mtn bikes have thru axles and would have liked to have the Yakima Front loaders but these were only $159 compared to about $450.

I have done the same. Be forewarned, you may need to add some tongue weight to off set the tail weight from the bikes, otherwise trailer may get a bit squirrelly at Hwy speed.TV- '16 Chevy Colorado LT Crew Cab-DuraMax

Thanks for the advice. Should have plenty of tongue weight. I have 3.5 gals of gas, a generator and another storage box of goodies up front.2017 Tab 320s Outback, Towed by a 2017 Jeep Jku, Live in Prescott, Arizona

Which bike rack did you find that worked for you? Is this solution still working for you. Seems I recall advice to be careful about amount of weight added on this rack, but two bikes seem reasonable to me.

We carried our bikes up there on Yakima Aero Raptor upright carriers. It was kinda worrisome for me. I’ve hauled bikes on my vehicles since the 70’s. But I could always see a part of the bike. Even on the roof I could see a tip of a handgrip or shadow. Back there I couldn’t see any of it. Every stop it seemed like I was checking the security of the bikes.2022 TAB 400 Boondock, 2019 Toyota Tacoma Sport 4x4

@GatorEgg lol... I do the same. I can see the hand grip on my bike(driver side) but nothing of my gf’s bike on passenger side. Always checking when we stop, but never had any issue with thousands of miles logged(knock on wood...).TV- '16 Chevy Colorado LT Crew Cab-DuraMax

The only issue I had was when I didn’t feel like loading the bikes up there for last road trip home from Cheaha State Park, Al to Tampa, Fl. I put the bikes in the bed of my Tacoma. Some stop along the way someone decided they needed my bike rim more than me and appropriated it for themselves.2022 TAB 400 Boondock, 2019 Toyota Tacoma Sport 4x4

What racks did you use? My Lynskey also has a thru-axle, and yours seems like a much more cost-friendly solution than the Yakima.ytram1958 said:Just put some bike racks on the Yakima bars. I've been using these Inno racks for 3-4 years now, very happy with them. They include locks, and you can use the thru axles for a very secure attachment. Absolutely no problems except user error, I've put a few dents in the T@b while holding the bike and inserting the axle. You have to go from the backside on the passenger side mounted rack, and it's a little trickier.

We use the yakima wheel-on front loader rack x 2 mounted on both sides of the spare tire so that the front wheel rests are oriented with the bicycle front down and to the rear. That way the bicycle’s weight is supported by the bracket. Once you’ve mounted and unmounted the bike a few times it’s easy, and I’m small and older. We have carried the bikes over 15,000 miles and like this method. The tongue weight is affected and can get “bouncy” if you don’t keep it loaded. I am told this is why NuCamp has moved the spare to the tongue in newer 320 models.
