Battery balancer

I noticed on the Renogy website they recommend a battery balancer when running multiple batteries in series or parallel. Is this truly necessary for two 12 volts in parallel?

    I have read that batteries in parallel, your 2 twelves obviously, can benefit most from a balancer.  Running batteries in series is much less of a problem - hence why so many opt for 2 six volt batteries. (note: a single twelve or six volt battery is actually already a series of lower voltage cells mounted inside the same box)
