This will be my longest trip with the old truck. Looks to be about 400 miles one way. We’re going drag racing at Dragway 42. No hookups. I bought an extra battery and I get to try my solar panels I bought last year.

1953 in USA was the last year for the flattie. 1954 had the new overhead valve Y block.

Well, day one didn’t work out well. I got 130 miles away and I lost power and had backfiring out the exhaust. Limped toward home. About 40 miles from home it backfired up through the carburetor and started running like normal. I’ll try again tomorrow.

@Pintoplumber, sorry to hear that. There is a saying "no good deed goes unpunished", hopefully your second attempt is better. Maybe the truck got homesick?

Well, this didn’t end well. Happened again about 30 miles from Ohio. I replaced the points and condenser and couldn’t get it restarted. Got home about midnight.

I got new points and condenser from Auto Zone and it fired right up. My spares were used and I guess they were no good. Expensive lesson learned.

I was so looking forward to this racing weekend. It would have been my 1st camping with no electric. My truck is still 6 volt, so to keep the refrigerator running I put solar panels in the bed.
