A Tip For Picking Out Campgrounds

Rad's post about the marina campground made me want to share a tip I use when looking for a campground.

I go to Google Maps and look up the address. I then go to satellite view and zoom in on the area. I can see what the campground looks like and most important, what the surrounding area/neighborhood looks like. It has saved me a lot of time and headaches when you are unfamiliar with the area.

    Satellite view is also helpful when boondocking.

    I preview in maps, too (Bing.) It saved me from a flood-prone campsite, once. I also try to check for reviews.

    Checkout the link you posted here.  Found most reviews (in the South Central Region are dated in 2011.    Either folks no longer camping or just not want to write anymore?

    No, they're still active - I also get email alerts from them. Check around their site, there's always new stuff. Another way to get good camping tips and locations - if you have an iPad (maybe Android) - is to download Flipboard and subscribe to some camping mags - they call them mags but many are curated posts from around the web (just search for "camping"). Always find interesting stuff like "27 Lakeside Campsites". If you want to save these, there's another app called "Pocket" that allows you to archive anything you find and read/refer to it later.
