Class II vs Class III Hitch for Tab

Nucamp's website states in the Q&A page below that a Class III hitch is needed for towing a Tab. Some factory hitches are Class II and rated for 3500 lbs, which should be adequate for a 2017 Tab 320. Is there any reason a 1-1/4" Class II receiver and ball mount cannot be used with a 2" ball?

For the TAG, TAB, and TAB400 you need a class 3 hitch with a 2" ball.

    Class II hitches are limited to 350 lbs tongue weight. With a 320 there is a good chance to stay under that number even fully loaded unless there is something heavy mounted to the tongue (e.g. bike rack with e-bikes). The 400 is listed at 328 lbs dry so it will exceed the 350 lbs limit when loaded.

    Found this from Curt.  Possible the shank opening may be too small.  But, you may get lucky!

    Thanks, Sharon. There is no problem with assembling the Class II ball mount and 2" ball. Etrailer.com even shows a pre-assembled unit. What I am wondering is why Nucamp says Class III is required for all Tabs and whether others have had any problems towing Tab 320s with a 1-1/4 inch Class II hitch.

    More than likely they are building in some headroom on the specs.

    Thanks. Just got a response from Nucamp:

    I spoke with my tech and we would not have an issue with this as the towing capacity is high enough to cover the weight of the camper.
