Blowout - Check your tires!

Just got my 2021 320S back together after a scary blowout last Sunday.

I blame myself, as I planned on replacing the tires this year. However, they were the original tires, but they looked like new, still had a lot of tread left, and had no more than 20,000 miles....so I figured one more trip wouldn't hurt. I was less than 10 miles from home when the passenger side tire blew on a huge overpass of I-75. Super scary changing the tire on that very, narrow shoulder. Every vehicle that passed by shook my little trailer.

The tire was so torn up that I couldn't tell what the root cause was. I don't think I hit anything...but who knows at this point.

Thank goodness nobody was hurt and I sustained no real damage to the camper. Just a few scuffs on the fender that rubbed out nicely.

I just put two, new Goodyear Endurance tires on it and performed a full service on the spindle bearings.

PLEASE...don't procrastinate if your tires reaching the end of their useful life!

OUCH - sorry to see this. Though the stock tires on my 320S Boondock lasted several years. I was able to replace them with LT (light truck) tires that are built to much higher standards then trailer tires.

Based on my sample size of 1 the tire probably got a puncture and overheated as it lost air. Two years ago I had to add air to one tire before a trip and some 20 miles in the tire blew. Should have tried to figure out why the tire was low.

@Grumpy_G. That would make sense. That part of the highway was littered with broken glass, hub-caps, etc. There was what appeared to be a puncture on a sidewall....so your explanation makes a lot of sense.

Good move with the Endurance tires. Based on my experience, they will hold up well.

I just put on Goodyear Endurance tires. Also added this TPMS for the camper tires. Just sits on the dash, no wiring needed. I like that it gives you the pressure and the temperature. I figure it's a lot cheaper than a blowout: https://amzn.to/4jJfHr9

the problem is that you cannot see thermal breakdown until it is too late. Hot temperatures contributing to earlier decisions to replace. I still had good tread as well but I replaced them anyway on my 2021 tab 320. Estimated milage was 12000 and that used to be the longest that ST tires were recommended to be in use.

Oh my gosh. That's terrible. I am glad you are ok. Dana at Missouri teardrop told us to replace I think every five years no matter what. They use those cheap Chinese tires, we also went with the Goodyear endurance. We have a Boondock so we stepped down a tiny bit of a size but it rides really well and I feel more confident.

@ColleenD2. Thank you and all the others for your comments. My T@B is almost 5 years old (bought it in July of 2020). The guy at the tire store the same thing about the Trailer King tires. I guess I assumed that NuCamp would use a higher quality tire. Anyway, I feel much better with the Goodyear tires.

I’m in about the same place as @Basil48192 (minus the blowout). 2021 320S Boondock. The original tires have about 30k on them.

I’m seriously considering the Maxxis M8008 ST225/75r15 in load range D, so stepping down in size but up in load range. I’m also picking up the TPMS system that @SLJ mentioned above.

Hello,
I need to replace (due to age) the Rainer Apex tires on my 2021 TAB 320s Boondock trailer. I do travel off-road a bit (dirt and gravel roads). Will the Goodyear Endurance tires in ST225/75R15s hold up on these types of roads. The OEM tires (Rainiers) have lugs on the sidewall but I am not sure if this is beneficial or just show. I talked with a few Bell Tire and Discount tire shops in Indianapolis and they all stated that I should NOT go with an off road light truck tires (KO2s). Thoughts and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if this has already been covered ad nauseum....

Michelin LT on camper, boat trailer and all cattle trailers. No blow outs for years. ST normally are not temp rated so summer heat separates tread

I have never had an issue with the stock Ranier Boondock tires. I did have a blowout on my 320 with a brand new Goodyear Endurance tire. If you tow enough, you are eventually bound to have a blowout. Glad you are back on the road!

Thanks @Basil48192 for the heads up on tires. I checked the date on my Rainiers and found they were from 2018. Not a lot of miles but we are planning a long trip to FL so we went ahead and got the Goodyear Endurance 225/75 R15 today. They seem fine and tow basically the same. Max PSI is 80 and load range E which I was told really won't make any difference for the trailer.

One clear advantage is changing the tire. The Goodyears are a bit narrower and thus were clearly easier to mount. I had always struggled to dismount the OEM Rainiers.

Overall happy to have the peace of mind before a long trip.
