Starlink-full size or mini

I just bought a 2023 tab 400. I have never had a camper. I already have a full size starlink at home and some people have suggested that I just bring my home unit and use it on the road. Any opinions about bringing my full size or buying the mini? Thank you.

I have both, an original pre-production unit from the "better than nothing" days and a mini for camping/overlanding. The mini is obviously easier to carry around but it also uses only ~30 Watts which is beneficial unless you always camp with hookups. I run the mini of a small Jackery power station so I can place it wherever it works best.

I haven't followed all the different plan changes over the years but it used to be that using a residential contract dish somewhere else would not work after a few days.

Edit: Forgot to mention the mini has the wifi router integrated so less devices to deal with.

I'd go with the Mini as it works better with 12V systems. With the standard you need an inverter since the router is powered by 110V AC. You just need to make sure the cable to your 12V source is 3 meters or less due to voltage drop concerns with longer cables. Here's a cable I use that's been working great on our boat and trailer.

Their current roam plan is $50 for 100GB per month. After 100GB you go to a slower mode. They also have an unlimited Roam mode that's about $165 per month.

There are specific 12V car adapters for the mini that include a "step-up converter" (DC-DC converter I suspect) that boost the voltage so the cable can be longer.

Rumor has it Starlink is working on a mini with integrated battery which would be the perfect solution for my application at least.

It depends on what you need it for. The full-size has faster speeds.

I have the mini. It's super portable and I usually just throw it on top of my truck or the picnic table.

The roam plan is changing next month to $55 a month. They still have the standby plan at like $10 a month and that gets you enough data (speed) for text messages or email, but that's about it.

I am thinking about installing in a bulkhead connection in my Nautilus similar to the solar and coax connections where I can have the power unit (plug) inside the trailer and connect the power cable to a connection at the Nautilus box. My power unit won't fit onto the outside plug on my 320 because the unit plug is square/boxy shaped and too big for the receptacle. I solved that problem by getting a little six inch extension cord and letting it just hang down on the side of the trailer. I don't like that solution though. I like being able to unplug it at night without having to go outside to do it. You can also set it to go to sleep on a schedule if you don't want it running all night long when you are not using it.

There's a ton of accessories, including battery packs that mount onto/into the mini dish itself, as well as all kinds of cables and adapters available. I haven't checked it out yet, but there's a youtube channel called veritas vans that has a storefront where they sell stuff like that.

Edited to add that if anyone is interested in getting starlink, let a current customer know and they can give you a link so that you and them both will get a month free. It's done thru starlink and is legit.

We have the standard actuated Starlink that I run via and Xtar-Link 12v power converter. The power consumption is much improved compared to running it on 110v using the inverter. Plus, the Netgear router that I use is more reliable than the Starlink router.
