Trim question

All,

A month ago I noticed the little long black strip that folds into what appears to be an aluminum channel had split down the center causing the strip to fall out. Upon consideration of replacing the strip, I hatched an alternative idea that should last forever…

I considered filling the aluminum channel with black silicone and making it looks nice. My only concern is the possibility of having to remove this piece of trim at some point in the future. There are small screws along the bottom of the channel, and if I fill the channel with silicone, it's going to be a bear to dig all of that out in the event the channel needs to be removed for whatever reason…. In other words… the silicone is forever.

My question is, is there a service reason for these screws to be accessible in a realistic situation? Or is the channel just for looks more or less? I haven't committed yet. Photo below:

if is is the thin black plastic in the aluminum channel, it is just a filler to prevent dirt etc. accruing. The channel is for an external canopy, the edge of which slides through the channel. I would leave it as is and keep it clean.

A canopy… so THAT'S what it's for!

Fair enough, I'll leave it alone. That is, unless I find some beading or something that would squeeze in there (easily removable of course).

@AndreaPalumbo That is the famous "Keder rail" that can be used for canopies, awnings, and all sorts of different things. Here are a bunch of threads about them. Many owners have made their own shades and awnings, etc, or purchased the various accessories that fit into the rail.

And if you don't foresee using the keder rail but really don't want to leave it empty, that trim is readily available. Search for vinyl trim strip, insert, or screw cover. It comes in rolls, just be sure to measure your old trim so get a long enough piece in the correct width.

Boy I'm glad I didn't caulk that rail! lol.

Thanks for all the feedback. Now I have some new ideas for the rail (seeing as how it's for accessories)... I'm not sure if anyone noticed the command hooks I have hanging, those are for my hanging string lights that I put up sometimes, I might see about finding some newer hooks that will incorporate into the rail so it won't look as tacky.
