Broken Propane Cover Latch - Outback

My outback has a round diamond plate aluminum box for the propane tank and battery. The lid to the box has a rubber latch that you pull down and slip under a hook fitting to lock the lid to the box. Tonight when I pulled down on the rubber latch, it broke. (Insert bad words here.) So, on Monday I'll call Elsie and order three. The trailer is only two years old and it won't hurt to have a couple of spares. I'm thinking that since the latch is rubber and exposed to the elements, it probably shouldn't be expected to last more than a couple of years. Might as well get some extras.

Anyone else have this problem?

Not yet, but it's looking ragged. I know it's just a matter of time. Was thinking of doing something different when the time comes. Might replace in the Spring with something lockable.

I had mine broken 6 months after purchase (2015 Outback). They sent me a replacement under warranty (I used a bungee cord while I was waiting).

Seems like the design of this rubber latch could be improved. A metal latch that can be locked would be better. Like db_cooper, I'm tying to think of a better DIY solution.

Is the shape of the Outback box so different from the plastic box that the latch won't work? Also, I think by law you cannot LOCK the propane box.

Large size mailbox lock from Home Depot. Used a step-drill to cut 1/2" opening in top. Lock it only when I leave the campsite with the propane off.

That's what I was thinking Outback AZ, and for storage at home with the propane off. Had a few grill tanks walk off, meth heads use a lot of propane around these parts.
