12 volt cooler and Zamp charging port.

Has anyone done a mod to use the Zamp charging port for a 12 volt cooler? I think I read somewhere that they reverse the polarity but if you had the proper polarity to the cooler would it work or is it set up to only charge the battery? I need just a little more space for the Christmas holiday and using that port would make it easy for travel.

The Zamp connector on the side of the propane tub is wired directly to the battery. I guess it could be used to run a 12V appliance, but I'm no electrician. Amazon sells a reverse polarity pigtail (I recall ChanW posting the exact model #). I bought one and use it so I can plug my BatteryTender into the Zamp port.2016 Outback 320

I have an additional Zamp connector on the side of my tub that I use for my ARB fridge/freezer. Since I put the plug on the ARB wiring, I wired it for safety, just as the Zamp is wired--positive to the covered pin and negative to the exposed pin. I attached the wiring to the battery to match.
Zamp wiring is not is not reversed--it is wired so the positive side is not on the exposed metal side (fewer blown fuses).Verna, Columbus, IN

You can get a reverse polarity Zamp type at most Walmarts - Trolling motor accessories/electronics.

Thanks for the information. Maybe I'll wire a 12 volt receptacle directly to the battery. I don't want to blow anything up on my maiden voyage.2017 Tab Max S (Silver/Black) 2013 Ford Edge

As long as you have an in-line fuse, nothing will go wrong...if the fuse blows, it's wired backwards.Verna, Columbus, IN

The Zamp port is a 12V receptacle wired directly to the battery. Just follow Verna's advice regarding polarity and fuses and it will work fine.Vegascacher said:Thanks for the information. Awesome thanks. Just waiting for my wiring (ordered from Amazon). I need to attach a 12 volt receptacle to a pigtail. The cooler plugs into a cigarette lighter type receptacle. I work during the week so this will be a nighttime project on Wednesday or Thursday. I'm running out of time but ill get it done.2017 Tab Max S (Silver/Black) 2013 Ford Edge
