What have you actually strapped to the Yakima rack?

So, first thing I noticed with our new rig is this sweet Yakima rack with the spare.  It looks great but I'm actually kind of wary to strap anything else to it due to it's position.  I feel like anything significant on here like a rocket box would not be aerodynamically sound and more weight behind the axle is prone to make the tongue way too light.  I kind of want to strap a 6ft, 45lbg Clam Quick Set bag carrying a screen room on it but it's at a weird angle. What do yall use it for?  Is it a glorified tire holder?

Hmmm, this is more helpful than trying the forum's search function.  Ok, looks like the rack itself with the tire seems to hog a bunch of the weight limit.  I've no interest in bikes back there and a rocket box isn't really sound.  I think I can get away with strapping the screen room to it and that's about it.
  • I strap camping chairs to the rack, one on each side of the tire.  That's about it, though.

Slip7, somewhere along the line I learned this Google trick for searching this forum. Using a google search, use this "syntax."

    search terms site:http://tab-rv.vanillaforums.com/

The "search terms" can be anything you might be looking for.  The word site in front of the tab forum address limits the search to these forums.

  • I have a clam screen room....it's great. I actually throw it inside the camper..I have an Outback also.  I don't put anything else in the roof rack...don't trust it....just my opinion

    Thanks for that tip.

I think I like the chair idea. I found some pics with this new search. Nice fit and light too.

Somewhere here on this site, I saw a hack where a sewer hose storage pipe was attached to the lower end. It was situated horizontally.  FYI.

  • We moved the tire to the tongue, so we could add fork mount bike carriers.  It also frees up the space for 2 camp chairs.  Thought about adding sewer hose storage, but don't like the idea of any drips running down the back of the camper.  We have light bikes, and they've done great back there.  Just did a trip with lots of washboarded dirt roads, and they hung on tight.

When I was at the dealership picking mine up, I saw a "guy" with is out back. Had the the sire plus two skewer mount bike mounts, one on each side. I want to try that for Gloria and me...
