The Elwell has to be more expensive than the old window units. Personally I prefer the light stain but it doesn’t seem rational to suggest that they switched to dark stain as some cost-saving measure… -

FWIW Victron is going to roll out a shunt that processes battery data and sends it directly to the Victron app. It will be a stand-alone device without a separate display. -

If you don't want to sew it yourself or bring it to a canvas shop for repair, you could try using a piece of Dacron sail repair tape on it. -
