Cincinnati, OH to Northwood, NH

We have a trip planned in a couple of weeks to visit family and camp in NH and we are going out I-90 through NY. Normally when I get to Albany I would go South and take I-90 into MA on the Mass Pike but looking at the map I think I'd like to take Route 7 in NY out of Albany to Route 9 through VT and into NH and my question is, Route 9 looks pretty twisty so wondering if this is a suitable drive for a small trailer? We have an F150 towing a T@B camper (which is a larger teardrop). Any insight into this route/plan much appreciated. I spent a good part of my life in NH but have never been out this section of Route 9.

Thanks,

-Alan

I've taken the T@Bpole down many a twisted road, you should have no issues, particularly pulling with an F150.

States the T@Bpole has camped, so far ;)

FYI, look at your route to make sure it doesn't put you in the Taconic Parkway in NY. You can't take trailers on the Taconic and there is no advanced warning.

Been on many a hairpin-curve, switchback laden road and had no problem. Check what the grades might be though. 6 degree were fine, 9 degree can be a challenge. I hear there are even 12 degrees out east.

HA! I can't believe I explained to the T@B group what a T@B was, LOL, I copy/pasted my post from a post I put on a different RVing site and didn't proof read when I pasted it here. Sorry. Thanks for the replies.

When I head up to New England I'm considering taking Interstate 86 from just East of Erie, then Interstate 88 into Albany. No tolls! I'm in Florence and a soon to be T@B owner. I hope to meet you some day.

Route 9 in VT has always been a rough ride, full of frost heaves and pot holes. It's a very pretty drive, though. If going to NH, I suggest going Route 2 to I-91 and cutting over to NH from there. If you are going to the Great North Woods region, you can take 91 all the way up to St. Johnsbury, VT., then cross over into NH from there. 91 is an EASY drive, smooth as silk, and very pretty.

Interstate 86 is easy, but in Western NY, it is still a real mess from the flooding a few years ago... it is very rough. You might consider I-80 or if you have time for a scenic drive take Rt. 6 from Erie to Tioga, PA. It is a real pretty drive through the Allegheny National Forest.

I just drove to south Duchess County, NY over Memorial Day. Apart from some narrower lanes on I 81 North, the I 80 route was a breeze. My family frequents I 86 fir trips from Akron to the Finger Lakes.

Nathan - how do you "make" that map and color the states you've been in? I think I'd like to do that when I retire. Thanks! Michele

I agree you should take 86 rather than 90. Less traffic, nicer highway, no tolls, beautiful scenery.

It's possibly no farther in miles either.

I take 86 rather than 90 whenever I can. We live just outside Buffalo, which is on 90.

If going to Northwood, NH, these directions are okay, but you need to get on 93, until Concord, then Rte 4. If you go to St J, you are too far north.

You can do it on this site.  I have the image hosted on my own photo hosting site, and you can set am image in your signature. I shrunk it down a bit so it would not take up too much room.

I wish I were retired, still another 30 years, I just get plenty of vacation.

Thanks! Cool site --- looking forward to visiting plenty of states, taking time to take in the views and visit family and friends along the way - April '16 will be here before I know it!

Alanmcd, Good news! We took a drive down VT-9 today and it is in GREAT shape. Easy driving. Lots of hills, but plenty of climbing lanes. It should be a breeze for you!
