Strip Light Question

Presently cruising the north shore of a Lake Superior - fantastic. Had a close look at the strip lights with a mirror and noticed the following : every 3 or 4 LEDs there is a smaller bulb unlit; as well there is on a similar spacing a pair of orange buttons marked + and -.  I am guessing that the orange button activated the unlit bulb in that spacing. Not that I want to fool around with the multitude of orange buttons; but does anyone know what actually happens with this ? Perhaps colours appear.

Is it a brightness control?

@RCB, I suspect, as @Sharon_is_SAM has suggested it is brightness and dimmer control. I added led strip lights under our keder rail and the control has a plus and minus sign for just that purpose. Good luck. Watch the strip and push that (minus) button! I'm pretty sure the apocalypse will not ensue and am confident that nothing will happen regarding the nuclear football carried everywhere POTUS travels.
