The Volvo software is pretty cool in that once it detects trailer hooked up, it asks you on the dash if you want to perform a lamp test. When you respond, it waits about 10 seconds (enough time to get to the rear of the trailer) then cycles running lights, brake lights, and turn indicators. Quite nifty. I have had my prodigy 3 seasons and it performs flawlessly. Cheers!

@jbajor yes, And that's a pretty cool feature. The car also has trailer stability control so if it senses the trailer swaying it will apply the car's brakes apparently one side or the other to bring the trailer back in line (I suspect more accurately, to keep it from swaying in the first place.)
It also lets you know if a trailer tail light is burnt out
