Finally!! A real trash can!!

Found this trash can on Amazon after careful measure and LOTS of searching - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DFCDDV5K

Clipped off the little side hooks and mounted a pair of heavy picture hangers:

Mounted the companion hangers (inserting) onto the trash can:

I made sure that the weight of the trash can rested mostly on the lip of the door's inset so that there would be less stress on the picture hanger-thingies.  Fits perfectly into the recess, even with the swivel top!  Just enough to be bigger, but not too much of an intrusion inside or out.

The swivel part (by accident) rubs a bit on the door plastic, but allows it to be propped open during use.  If it becomes an issue, I'll just put some 1/8" inserts behind one or the other pair of mounts........

The top lid insert pinches a trash bag nicely to hold it in place!  This one is a THREE thumbs up!

The old trash can also overlaps the screen door line. I use the original trash can to hold my plastic grocery bags (I double up at Wallymart). Then I hang the bag from the door "knob", so I never forget to get rid of it. I check the bag for any pinholes, if there are any, I double up. Never had a spill, always easy peasy.

Nice job! I just did something very similar because I also could not stand that trash can. I built one with a slight taper so it doesn't interfere with the fridge. And the lid stays open so it's a lot more useful while cooking.

Purchased the gray Amazon trash can.  Did not mount it on the door but simply used as a free-standing trash can to see how well it would work.  The swivel lid limited how much trash could be placed inside.  The lip around the top was not "deep" enough to secure it to the can.  It took too long (for me) to stretch a trash liner around the rim of the can.  Returned it to Amazon.  Don't know why, but I have really struggled finding a great solution for handling "inside" trash.  Having trash on the door is a nuisance and a potential fly-magnet in the summer when the door is open.

Looks like it sticks out further. I would be worried it will break the screen if you forget to open it before shutting the door.

The max depth is about the same as the original. Just not rounded so it has better volume. The door hasn't really been an issue. Not too likely to close the door from the outside and not see the screen, but if you did it's very flexible and just goes back into shape.

Check it as being "not round" will definitely push more screen area than the original door trash can does. "Not too likely to close the door from the outside and not see the screen". From past experience there is a 100% chance that will happen at some point no matter how careful you are.
The door/screen design on the newer T@Bs is the thing I dislike most. They should have stuck with a standard door and swing out screen door combination.

    Great mod, thank you @boathealer.
While I would not advocate closing on screen deliberately, the pleated screen easily deflects and should be fine- see pic.
