Year One Down - Starting Year Two

NomadNomad Member Posts: 7,209
As many of you know, I went full time as a rookie last year - a total greenhorn. Picked up my T@B and hit the road. Well, year one is now history and after spending a couple weeks visiting friends and camping in my three brothers driveways washing, waxing, doing some minor warranty repairs I hit the road today starting year two.
First leg wasn't a real long one, a mere 70 miles to search out an old abandoned schoolhouse to shoot. All I found was a pile of ashes - got hit by lightning and burnt to the ground. So instead of boondocking it on site I'm in a nice little muni campground where the sign just says "enjoy" and if you want to make a donation just drop it off at the city offices. Nice concrete pads with electric and water.
Off to the next target in the morning.

For those interested, here's some shots from late year one...

Kudos!  I enjoy your posts.  Next year my longest trip will be 3 months, so one year is really impressive to me.  Keep it up. Hope to see you at Tearstock 2016!

Have you tried photomatix for merging images?

I'm jealous.  Can't get my wife to commit for longer that a few months.  If you get out SF area, I know of an old schoolhouse that might be a candidate.  It's in one of Ansel's old stomping grounds.

mash2 - Used photomatrix for some HDR shots a few years ago. Some of these night shots kind of have an HDR look but aren't, just straight lighting. Will probably end up in the SF area at some point. Will definitely let ya know.

Awesome life choice !!  Love the concept of hitting the road for an extended trip in my (whoops OUR) t@b in the near future but it will have to wait until we are retired.  Seems like a long ways away !! Keep the updates and pics coming.   Play safe out there !

PXL - I'll be following in your footsteps (sort of) beginning in April and starting my first year full time. Will reassess after that to see if the 'travel gods' have a second year in the plan (I think so as I'd like to head east in year 2). Good to hear someone has done it. You seem to find several municipal sites - is that via your apps or a website? Here's to a great Year 2!

Michele - Taking it a year at a time. End of one, decided on two like you plan to :-)
My main campground app is UltimateCG with AllStays as a backup. UCG lists far more campgrounds, especially Muni/County and out of the way sites. And you can filter by types. I mainly use AllStays to find Walmarts :-)

Ratkity - Thanks. Hope to do more vehicles but they seem to tightly pack them in so hard to isolate just one. I target churches because they're easier to spot/find (steeples) and they tend not to tear them down - then take what else I find on the way.

One thing nice about doing this without a schedule like one would have for a time-limited vacation is that if you wake up to 25mph (sustained) winds - gusting to 45 - you can just stay put. The nice thing about UCG is it showed a muni 6-pad campground less than 10 miles away. Actually, it showed three within 10 all along my next route.

Hey Michelle, do you have your title, aka, certificate of origin from Tom's yet? I do not and am two weeks away from my 90 day temp reg expiring...just curious.

I did get my title and registration/plate --- quite a while ago. Sounds like a phone call is in order to either Tom's or the DMV?

    Hi PXLated,
So glad to hear that you've decided to full-time for a second year. We have truly enjoyed following your travels, viewing your awesome photographs, and learning from the tips and tricks that you share with the rest of us. We think of you as a guru. Often in our conversations, one of us will ask, "How does PXLated do that?" Hoping to see you at Tearstock 2016, or to rendezvous somewhere out there on one of our multi-month rambles.
    Happy Trails!

Thanks for the kind words. It's definetly an adventure. Been thinking about the differences of living on the road vs camping trips / vacations lately, may do a post at some point.

Hmmmm, seems a person with you obvious photographic talent should have an avatar for year two. I enjoy your posts as well. :|
