Northeast Canada Travel Plans

We've traveled northwestern Canada to Alaska, but not much to the east. At the end of July we plan to make our way north from New Jersey. The idea is to take the six hour ferry ride to Newfoundland Island and spend at least a couple week exploring.

From there, the thought is to take the short ferry ride to Newfoundland and Labrador. Then a big northern loop; 510 to 500 to 389 and back toward Quebec City and Maine. There are some very desolate stretches along this upper route.

Has anyone here done something similar and have thoughts or recommendations? Better to take the ferry back to Nova Scotia or is it worth the experience?

We were talked out of an excursion to Newfoundland while at a Nova Scotia campground by a NS camper/resident and reinforced by a CMP officer/camper from Newfoundland. Very long distances between very limited services with nearly constant cool, wet weather. After an evening around a campfire with these folks we decided on following the coastline of the Gaspe' Peninsula and St Lawrence River.

Much of our travel is reservation-free wandering and this is just an experience from someone once with similar ambitions…

    Have fun!

Nice write up/pictures @rfuss928. You have us even more excited about the trip. I see your experience was back in 2017. From what I'm reading, the road conditions have been improved since then. My biggest concern is that services are still limited. Doable, but always topping off the tank at every opportunity. It also looks like dispersed type camping along that route is not a problem.

We also travel reservation free a lot of the time, but because the ferry had to be scheduled we're trying to lock some places in before Newfoundland. From there and into the Labrador area we'd be taking one day at a time. Traveling those remote areas seems exciting while sitting here at home, but it might take some convincing to get my wife completely onboard. The good part is that with no solid plan beyond Newfoundland, we can wait to make that decision.
