What is boondocking?
-
Boondocking is camping out in the boonies - No services what so ever. On your own. Bring out what you brought in. Might be wilderness or may just be in the sticks. It's dry camping at the next level.
-
Or, it can be explained as the best type of camping in the world!

To those who don't know PXL's photograph game, the first picture was "Find the T@B" in the amazing landscape!! LOL. Luv it.2017 820R Retro Toy Hauler from 2015 Tabitha T@B from 2009 Reverse LG Teardrop (but a T@Bluver at heart)

curious how to find places to boondock? we are up in the PNW, so I am assuming that there are great places out here in the great west (not just AZ), just not yet sure how to locate ... thoughts?John & Lisa, 2016 M@x S, Silver/Yellow, Hood Canal, WA, TV = 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser

I generally spend about ten hours researching a boondocking site. First I search Google with something like coolest places to visit in (insert area of interest) . Then once an area peaks my interest I check websites and Google earth to narrow down three locations that look promising. The last step is to drive out and see which one works.

My go to app is UltimateCG (campground) with my backup being Allstays - I have them on my iPad but think they are also avaiable on Android. There is also "Public Lands" - You can camp on most public lands (if you can find an access point) unless otherwise posted.

The pics above are outside Lone Pine, CA - BLM dispersed camping in the Alabama Hills at the base of Mt. Whitney.

AllStays Camp & RV app for my iPhone. It's all I've used for the past 4 years for any type of camping.lara9209 said:curious how to find places to boondock? we are up in the PNW, so I am assuming that there are great places out here in the great west (not just AZ), just not yet sure how to locate ... thoughts?Verna, Columbus, IN

Allstays has gotten better for boondocking but I still find it's missing places that UCG shows. The nice thing about Allstays though is it shows gas stations, Walmarts and road grades. I never want to do another 40 mile 9% grade as long as I live so always check my routes in Allstays even though I'm finding my campsite in UCG.

Try www.freecampsites.net.
-
There's that to but you need a net connection where with the apps you don't - just need to make sure the map tiles are cached for the area you're going/exploring.

The most rewarding boondocking sites are found the way Phulishcat finds them, with a lot of personal research. If that's not for you or you don't have the time this time then I also like Allstays app and freecampsites.net. Freecampsites.net is a free user based databank, so when I use it I then try to give back and share sites I know about.I just bought the Public Lands app but requested a refund. It's a broad-brush land status map and not very accurate in my part of the country. I wouldn't put too much faith in it. It may be useful to get you started but double check with other resources as well.

Research, planning - Of what you speak?
Another way to find out about good boondocking sites is following certain websites - One of the ones I keep track of because they also have maps of their past years travels is http://www.wheeling-it.com/
And, as you travel and meet people they tell you about their favorites.
