Terry, I'm just impressed that your 2016 has that metal shelf that extends in front of the box! AND they relocated the spare tire there -- that's super helpful as 90% of the time I ever bottom out it's the spare that's hitting.
Gas can should be fine there as long as it's not spending days baking in the sun.
I ALSO happen to notice that the top of your box is attached with REAL METAL SCREWS. My 2014 box top was just held in with plastic anchors. I say "was" because last night rolling down the highway the whole top of my box tore off and I didn't even realize it until I got to where I was going. It's a serious eyesore on a trailer prized for its cuteness.
