I would not remove them. Plastic tends to brittle with age and may break easily. I would mask carefully and spray in place after a light sanding and wipe down with mineral spirits. I have found this product to work well on plastic. I would do a small test befor committing to the complete job.
Great question about the paint. I am considering painting some of my plastic pieces that are discolored with age. I agree about not removing most of the trim, could be a real can of worms! Leslie and Ian, you will love your "vintage" t@b!
Jenn - Yes, just slightly - I have the silver on silver but the trim is slightly darker and it matches that. There are a couple other Krylon grays in the Walmart selection that are lighter - One of those may match if that's what you're looking for.
