They could connect to the battery several different ways. Alligator clips, or the ring terminals on the controller could attach to the battery. Someone else will have to chime in, but an 8.5 amp controller seems a bit small. Check any of the Renogy kits on Amazon and they would have a 20 amp controller, at least.
You could buy the panel and change the controller. (Check to see what kind of wires come off the solar panel...you might need some wiring, too.)
8.5 amp controller is fine for a panel that only produces 5.8 amps max. It's not very expandable, though. The controller is specific for this panel so it should be fine.

I agree. The controller only needs to be large enough to handle the current from the panels. My 100W suitcase came with a 10A controller. However, adding any more panels will dictate a larger controller.
I have a 40W Colrman panel and 7A charge controller. I have not taken any specific measurements, but it works as I expected. I like that I can plug it right into the Zamp solar port. No adapter needed.
