Washing Fabric Upholstery Covers

Does anyone have insight about potential shrinkage of zip-off upholstery seat covers washed in a washing machine?  Or even if hand washed....?  These are for an old (2004) Dutchman T@B's with the "U" shaped seating area?  I'm assuming the ones at the back without zippers which are attached to plywood bases, will need an upholstery cleaning machine.

Are they synthetic?  Cotton blend?  I have not heard of anyone washing the TaB slipcovers, but, I suspect you can wash them on cold delicate with detergent only (no softeners) and dry them on low heat briefly.  Put them back on the foam cushions and let them dry the remainder of the way to keep their shape.  This is how I wash my own denim slipcovers that are on my chairs at home.  I have denim slipcovers for our CS, too, but have not needed to wash them yet.  Have you removed them to see if they have any care label?  I don’t think our current manual says anything about slipcover care.

I misspoke.  Current models have vinyl on the undersides of the cushions - so no washing.  I think if yours are only cloth, I would still be tempted to wash them - gently.

Upholstery and Drapes

Draperies, mattress covers, upholstery and wallpads are manufactured from quality materials and should be dry cleaned only. Some dry-cleaning methods will damage vinyl or plastic found on cushions and drapes. Be sure to consult your local cleaners. Frequent vacuuming or light brushes between cleanings will help prevent accumulation of dirt and grime. Use of water based or detergent based cleaners may cause shrinking. Water stains may become permanent. Minor spills should be cleaned up quickly to avoid staining. The affected area should be blotted, not rubbed, to prevent the stain from working deeper into the fabric. On vinyl upholstery, remove dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner. Wipe the vinyl with a soft cloth and dampen in a solution of mild soap and water. Use the same solution with a soft-bristle brush on more difficult spots. You can also use commercially- available spray or foam-type vinyl cleaners.

Thanks Sharon.  I appreciate the information.  Our are vinyl backed, so I think we will wash them by hand.
