Ram 1500 Class III Bumper Hitch

We are looking at purchasing a Ram 1500. It comes with a class III bumper hitch. Is that suitable with a 400'?

    For a T@G perhaps, for TaB, or other 19-foot trailer, I would go with a class IV receiver type hitch.

    I I believe the OP may be confused. Your truck is capable of towing a Tab. A bumper hitch will not be suitable. A Class 3 box hitch, properly installed onto said truck will be suitable.

    Yes, the truck can handle a TaB, but I would not trust a bumper mounted hitch.  A class 3 receiver on a 1/2 ton truck that is a frame mounted receiver type unit would be ok.  Class 3 hitches and class 4 hitches both have 2" x 2" receiver tubes. Class 3 is different in that class 3 hitch weight ratings are consistently lower than class 4 hitches. This makes class 3 hitches much more versatile in terms of vehicle applications. They are found on everything from crossovers to pickup trucks.

    My 2006 Ram has a hitch that is connected to the frame from the factory.  If you look below the bumper you will see that its attached to a tube and not just the bumper.  

    My 2002 RAM had a flat spot on the bumper that I bolted a receiver to.  I used it to tow a small PUP without any issues.

    You could probably take it to a U-Haul and see if they can look at it and advise you if it's sturdy enough.

    Class 4 is overkill for these Tabs is all I am saying and that a proper Class 3 box high is sufficient.

    Yes, and I agree, if given the choice.  The only difference in a frame mounted setup is the max weight rating.

    If you have to get a receiver hitch installed, and there's a Class IV option for the Ram 1500 (I think there should be), I'd go with that.  Yes, a Class III is enough, but you might want to tow something bigger than a Tab 400 someday.

    Yes, a Ram 1500 has a Class IV hitch option, and is the normal receiver type hitch installed on a 1500, I would think...  B)
