"Notifications" button shows nothing

If I have an indicator of say, 'X notifications' in the upper right (w/ a small red number on top of the icon), tapping on the button now rewards me with "You do not have any notifications yet",  like this:

Is this how it's supposed to work?

Seems it used to list the threads that it was referring to, or maybe it would go to the notifications page, but not anymore.

    @ChanW - let's see what this does.  Yes, if you have a red number, when you tap on it it should open up to a list of messages like BrianZ mentioned you... or MuttonChops posted on your wall, etc.

    Yep. That's what I'm talking about... Nothing but the above message...

    I haven't tried another browser yet, because every time it happens the notification is no longer!
    (if you reply again to this thread I'll try a different browser)

    oK @ChanW.  Which browser do you usually use and which browser did you use for this notification?

    I use Brave Browser (Chrome). Have for a long time. But this change is new. Vanilla changed something?

    They do updates from time to time.  I will let them know of your issue.

    As mentioned above, I had the problem, but this afternoon notifications started working again. Assumed that someone looked into it after I posted?
