Some years ago we purchased an external surge protector, because both internal and external urge protectors are sacrificial.  I understood they would be ruined in the process of surge protection in some conditions.  If the external surge protector is ruined, we could simply unplug it, toss it, and continue our travels without it.  If the internal surge protector is ruined, we would have no external power available until it was replaced or bypassed.

Is that still the case with the newer models?

I just bought a EMS-HW30C that I will be installing soon. Saw this thread, thought I'd respond to help the next person. I asked their support and they explained that yes, it will sacrifice itself to protect your camper.

There is an internal bypass switch that will allow power to go through the unit, however of course there will not be any protection. For that reason I will keep my plug-in surge protector handy.

This way I can get the EMS-HW30C repaired and replaced, while bring protected by the plug-in surge protector, which won't do all that the EMS-HW30C can do, but it's some protection (better than none).

I plan to install it behind the passenger side folding back rest. Waiting for confirmation from nuCamp support on the wire spec, so I can replace the short orange wire coming from the 30A input to the WFCO with a longer one (not a fan of unnecessary splicing).

UPDATE: forgot to follow up on this. I ended up mounting it on the floor right next to the WFCO. I had to move the ground busbar over a little bit to make room (confirmed with T@B that moving it was ok. I put the display next to the two outlets, so I can see it when I open the door.

Had good luck with this inexpensive  option. Auto shutoff for under and over voltage, with surge protector and voltage readout. Low frills peace of mind.
