Under what circumstances should the tongue jack wheel be removed when towing?

ALL
High risk of the wheel contacting ground entering/exiting parking lots at gas & food stops.
Wheel or flat base (if used) should always be removed for travel.'18 320 S, pitched axle, 3020HE; PNW basedTV: '17 Colorado V6 Z71 4x4, Tow Package, GM Brake Controller

If you aren’t moving your trailer “by hand” then you can take it off and leave it in the back of your tow vehicle for forever. I have never used mine on two trailers, but everyone’s situation is different. I just used a wooden block (and now I have a plastic OxBlock) to put under the tongue jack. I do keep the wheel handy in case I might ever need to shove the trailer around, but my neck of the woods is hilly and nothing is level enough for me to trust it wouldn’t roll into traffic or into the lake, lol.2025 Tab 320 S BD2024 Nissan Frontier

I would absolutely remove a wheel for clearance reasons as MuttonChops describes.
I leave a flat plate in place full time. It has very little effect on clearance and if should somehow contact the ground it would provide some protection for the bottom of the jack tube. I carry a wheel in case I need one

We went with the Ultimate Jack. Both the jack and wheel are always removed before towing. They ride in the basket in front of the truck box.
edit to add that, like @dlb posted below, the Ultimate Jack makes it possible to swing the back door of the Jeep open.

I went with the Ultimate Jack as well. It goes in the tub when going down the road. When not there I have full access to the bed of the pickup.2021 Tab 400 Boondock
